For stuff that doesn't fit in the "games you purchased" or "games you started" threads whether it be your opinions on a game or what you're currently playing or games where you cbf making a thread just to say 1 thing about it :P

I watched the Dead Island video review and I must say I'm terribly disappointed in it. From their first teaser (which I watched 10 times) I expected a zombie game but backed up by an excellent story and a new twist on the whole zombie perspective. Instead its just another hack & slash system, cliche characters with stupid dialogue and repetitive gameplay that's only fun if you're planning to do multiplayer. This makes it a BIG pass for me and the only game I'm looking forward to this year is Batman, making it a very dull end for 2011

Just got Firemint Real Racing for my ipod touch and just wanted to recommend it. Im shocked at how good it is for a mobile device game, the steering is done by tilting the device left or right, the graphics are on par with a psp racer, and you can sync all your data to a central server, and also take part in online leagues - very well setup online side. Just quickly ran this race to test out the replay upload function (you can choose to upload a certain replay and im guessing a central server somewhere renders it and does the upload - nice):

Real Racing iPhone Replay By tubaros

Get it here:
http://www.firemint.com/realracing/index.html

Any other recommendations for games on there?
Looks like the release of Mass Effect 3 highlighted what is a real problem for GAME and the possibility of administration if GameStop don't buy the chain. MCV have a story on it so far. I have noticed one or two GAME branches closing recently but never thought much of it until now. Maybe they thought the launch of the PSVita would be a huge success and a welcome cash injection, but selling only 61 thousand units by all accounts in the UK the launch was a disappointment for some, even though its an expensive system with costly games and unique memory cards.

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/d-day-looms-for-game/092556

Mixed thoughts about it all, I really thought HMV would be the first to go but they've tried to turn things around. I don't have much time for GAME and some of the things they've done, which I won't go into here. Maybe old school Gamestyle readers might remember one or two things! However its the employees that have my sympathies if all of this does turn out to be true.

Can we expect to have a dedicated high street retailer for video games going forward? It's a sad day if not. Are we heading for a download only console format in the future, no more retailers?

Rather than roaming around between threads looking for "Oh, what did this person think of that movie" I thought it'd be a lot easier if we just had 1 thread for pure and simple film reviews. You don't have to do much, just share your opinions and dish out a score (if applicable)

Here's my latest reviews:

The Number 23

I find it strange that this doesn't have an average of 23 instead of 24 on Metacritic. Wish I saw the reviews first but the impression 'The West Australian' newspaper gave it as a preview did sound like an interesting concept and possibly a twisted but compelling movie. Jim Carrey returns after an average comedy remake of 'Fun with d*ck & Jane' to star in this movie and plays as an animal controller. Ace Ventura anyone? It starts off like that in a subtle comedy manner but then he discovers this book 'The Number 23' and notices that everything that's in the book reflects similar things from his early childhood.

The book basically talks about a detective who becomes consumed by the number 23, then when Walter (Carrey) thinks about it, there's a lot of stuff that adds up to 23. His driver's license, the date he was born, the day he met his wife, etc. Soon he becomes consumed by the number 23 too, just like the detective in the book. But what does it all add up too? Seriously there aren't many surprises in this movie, 23 is just a number and will always be a number - there isn't any twisted evil behind it. It's rather just a guy who has too much time on his hands and thinks "Hey, if you take 17 away from the number 40 on my letterbox, that adds up to 23 too! OMG! WTF?!"

The movie itself looks good, some creepy cinematic moments and with a believable performance from the cast. In the end though you'll realise that the movie is boring and the story doesn't reach to any climactic outcomes.

1.5 stars out of 5

-----------------------

Curse of the Golden Flower

Already released on DVD in the US but only just screening in cinemas locally this week - go figure. It's the latest movie from Zhang Yimou (director of House of Flying Daggers and Hero) who tries to blend martial arts with soap opera. I was disappointed with this, perhaps it's because I couldn't bother reading the subtitles this time around and stuck with the very average dub.

The richly detailed city and clothing is over the top - there can be such a thing as too much detail that it attempts to cover up for what it lacks. With every room containing golden imagery it looks too samey and takes up 3/4 of the movie. If you don't pay attention to the conversations you can easily lose the plot. Basically it's about betrayal and family matters. The action scenes whilst okay don't show up until the final few remaining minutes and feel "been there, done that".

If you like your action films and enjoyed House of Flying Daggers, Hero and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - be very cautious of this new film. It's one of this year's yawners

2 stars out of 5

Reports have long suggested Rockstar is hard at work on GTA V, with industry insiders and analysts pointing towards a likely 2012 release.

In June, sources allegedly close to the developer said the title is "well under way", with final touches like mini-games already being applied. Repeated rumours have suggested the game will be set in real world Los Angeles.

The first signs of the game crept online back in February via an actor's CV, and were quickly followed by some suspicious Rockstar-registered URLs.

Source: computerandvideogames.com

So, my novels gathering pace. Just blasted through the 50,000 word mark with sign of slowing down. It's not perfect, not by any measure, but I'm going for quantty over quality right now, just making sure the story advances. I have my plan ahead of my also, ready for the end of the first draft: second draft is making sure all the lose ends are ties up and smoothing out the characters. And number 2is .... Where I could do with a little help.

You see, it's set in regency London, in 1802, and the history is a little different to our own. I wanted a london, and a Europe, that was bigger, more colourful, louder and magical than reality. So, in my Europe, Europe is bigger. Much bigger. No sailing Round the bay of biscay in a day in this continant, oh no, and that's not factoring in the steam submersivals napolean may have waiting for you.

So, a little bit steam punk and a little bit magic. I've got both in there, but only as they count toward the story. I know that I want to expand on those, and that will form part of my edit. So, if anyone has them I'd really like to hear about Ny legends or stories you have heard about London. Old ladies who collected street children, princes who masqueradef as a commoner to fulfill their nasty desire to see what it feels like to kill someone, stuff like that.

Thanks in advance.

Right, two definite candidates for me in September are, Sunrise from Masters Of Cinema, sadly they've ditched the idea of following Disney with a DVD/Blu Ray combo.

Sunrise - F. W. Murnau, 1927
This new 2009 reissue of Sunrise (for the first time anywhere in the world in 1080p HD on Blu-ray, in addition to a newly mastered 2 x DVD set) contains two versions of the film: the previously released Movietone version, and an alternate silent version of the film recently discovered in the Czech Republic. The Blu-ray edition includes both versions in 1080p HD.

The culmination of one of the greatest careers in film history, F. W. Murnau’s Sunrise blends a story of fable-like simplicity with unparalleled visual imagination and technical ingenuity. Invited to Hollywood by William Fox and given total artistic freedom on any project he wished, Murnau’s tale of the idyllic marriage of a peasant couple (George O’Brien and Janet Gaynor) threatened by a Machiavellian seductress from the city (Margaret Livingston) created a milestone of film expressionism.

Made in the twilight of the silent era, it became both a swan song for a vanishing medium and one of the few films to instantly achieve legendary status. Winner of three Oscars for Best Actress (Gaynor), Cinematography, and a never-repeated award for “Unique and Artistic Picture”, its influence and stature has only grown with each passing year. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present a new 2xDVD and Blu-ray special edition of the film, including an all-new alternate version recently discovered in a Czech archive of a higher visual quality than any other known source.

Content:
• Restored high-definition transfers of two different versions: the American Movietone version, and the silent Czech version.

• Original English intertitles on the Movietone version, and optional English subtitles on the silent Czech version.

• Original Movietone score (mono) and alternate Olympic Chamber Orchestra score (stereo)

• Full-length audio commentary by ASC cinematographer John Bailey on the Movietone version

• Outtakes with either John Bailey commentary or intertitles

• Murnau’s 4 Devils: Traces of a Lost Film — Janet Bergstrom’s updated 40-minute documentary about the lost Murnau film

• Original theatrical trailer

• Original ‘photoplay’ script by Carl Mayer with Murnau’s handwritten annotations (150 pages in pdf format)

• 68-page illustrated booklet with numerous essays including a new reprint of a piece by Dudley Andrew.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Perhaps of more interest to many around 'ere:

Gladiator 2 Disc Steelbook Ltd Edition with Art Cards

DISC 1

* Theatrical Version (155mins)
o AUDIO COMMENTARY by Director Ridley Scott, Cinematographer John Mathieson & Editor Pietro Scalia
o DELETED SCENES –with optional commentary

* Extended Version (171mins)
o INTRODUCTION BY RIDLEY SCOTT
o AUDIO COMMENTARY by Director Ridley Scott & Actor Russell Crowe

* U-Control features on both Theatrical and Extended versions
o THE SCROLLS OF KNOWLEDGE - The original ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED? trivia track newly enhanced allowing viewers to access a series of new behind-the-scenes featurettes exploring key scenes throughout the film
o VISIONS FROM ELYSIUM: TOPIC MARKER- A U-Control feature that allows Disc One Viewers to tag moments of interest throughout the entire film, allowing them to create “shopping lists” of topics to learn more about from the features on Disc Two

DISC 2

* VISIONS FROM ELYSIUM: TOPIC PORTAL – A U-Control feature that automatically accesses further content from tagged moments of interest that have been marked by viewers from Disc One

* STRENGTH AND HONOR: CREATING THE WORLD OF GLADIATOR (200 mins.) - The definitive documentary on the origin, production and impact of this Oscar-winning Best Picture
o Tale of the Scribes: Story Development
o The Tools of War: Weapons
o Attire of the Realm: Costume Design
o The Heat of Battle: Production Journals Germania / Zucchabar / Rome
o Shadows and Dust: Resurrecting Proximo
o The Glory of Rome: Visual Effects
o Echoes in Eternity: Release and Impact

* STRENGTH AND HONOR will now include all-new Picture-In-Picture content accessed via U-Control (156mins)

* AURELIAN ARCHIVES
o THE MAKING OF GLADIATOR (25 mins.)
o GLADIATOR GAMES : THE ROMAN BLOODSPORT (50mins.)
o HANS ZIMMER: SCORING GLADIATOR (21 mins.)
o MAXIMUS UNCUT:Between the Takes with Russell Crowe (8mins.)
o MY GLADIATOR JOURNAL by SPENCER TREAT CLARK (Text/Photos) - The personal diary of the young actor who played Lucius, providing a unique and amusing perspective on the creation of an epic film
o VFX EXPLORATIONS: GERMANIA & ROME (24 mins.)

* IMAGE & DESIGN
o Production Design Featurette and Galleries (10 mins.)
o Storyboard Demonstration (14 mins.)
o Multi-Angle Storyboard Comparisons and Galleries (15 mins. x 2 angles)
o Ridleygram Galleries
o Costume Design Galleries
o Photo Galleries

* ABANDONED SEQUENCES & DELETED SCENES
o Alternate Opening Titles and Featurette (9 mins.)
o Blood Vision (with optional commentary) (3 mins.)
o Rhino Fight (with optional commentary) (5 mins.)
o Choose Your Weapon (1 min.)
o Treasure Chest (7mins)

* TRAILERS (2) & TV SPOTS (20) (13 mins.)

So, every so often we'll get to that point in time where everyone speculates about the 'next-gen' of consoles. I'm seeing that there's plenty more life in our current range of consoles (well, the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, at least - the Wii is a different story).

Here's what I've read:

Here's an analysis with the previous rumor we've heard today about the next-gen Xbox ("Xbox 720") powered by a six-core CPU with a prototype dual-GPU from AMD. And its partial announcement will be noted by Microsoft on CES 2012.

Source: non-reliable

But, it does raise the question of what you'd like to see in the next generation of consoles? Do you think that the 'whole body interaction' experience that Xbox Kinect delivers is the future, or are we looking towards something new?

Create your own rumours.
