Hong Kong classic movies
  • Been buying quite a few recently since the HKL (Hong Kong Legend) DVDs have been discontinued & most are going for a "cheap as chips" price - most were $7 brand new

In the last couple of weeks I've ordered

    Donnie Yen:
    In the Line of Duty
    Iron Monkey

    Jackie Chan:
    Dragons Forever
    Heart of the Dragon
    Wheels on Meals
    Project A 1 & 2
    Police Story 2
    Armour of God
    Fearless Hyena

    Others:
    Eastern Condors
Scorpion King (1991 - nothing to do with The Rock)
    Zu Warriors
    Iceman Commeth
    Story of Ricky
    Prodigal Son

Whilst I'm aware that Cine-Asia are reproducing some which occasionally include brand new HD transfers (which looked pretty good on Dragons Forever, much like the release of Big Boss where its hard to believe an old movie could look as good as this) I do prefer the originals mainly because of the coverart both on the front & the spines where its easy to identify who's in what movie & it looks very uniformed when you put a bunch together whereas CineAsia simply lets the title of the movie take up the entire spine. That & also some of CineAsia's releases are still 6 months away like Wheels on Meals

Has anyone else got a collection of oldskool HK flicks?
  • Hmmm....

    Miracles
    Project A pt1
    Project A pt2
    Police Story
    Police Story 2
    The Killer
    Hard Boiled
    Magnificent Butcher
Game of Death Once upon a time in Chine 1, 2 and 3
    Descendants of Wing Chun
    Prodigal Son
    Iron Monkey
    Fist of Legend
    A Chinese Ghost Story
    Infernal Affairs
    Drunken Master
    Way of the Dragon
    Fist of Fury
    The Big Boss

I haven't included newer titles like Ip Man, Red Cliff, Crouching Tiger and Little Big Soldier.  I might have some more, but off the top of my head I can't remember.

  • Hard Boiled is something else.
  • Yup....favourite bit?  Using a baby's wee to put out a fire.
  • I do have:

    Police Story 1
    The Killer
    Armour of God 2 bluray
    Fist of Legend
    Infernal Affairs bluray
    Big Boss
    Way of the Dragon
    Enter the Dragon bluray
    Fist of Fury
    City Hunter

In terms of oldskool HK flicks, I was just listing the ones I purchased in the last couple of weeks in my first post :P
  • City Hunter....I remember watching that and wondering what the hell was going on.  Jackie Chan suddenly morphing into Chun Li?
  • Yup! Also City Hunter isn't that complex, its only the sudden Street Fighter 5min thing that gives it the "wtf?" factor. City Hunter is also probably one of my fav Jackie Chan movies with a lot of replay value
  • I'll have to track it down as the sf2 scene is all I can remember. Have any if his classic film been transferred to blu ray well?
  • You can import it from Australia for AU$7 + shipping

I'd advise picking up some other titles from this website if you're missing some ;) Here's their full listing of the Jackie Chan stuff:

As for the bluray transfers, a majority are upscaled by K&R (especially Police Story which is a mess with 7.1 audio only, avoid!!!) but Armour of God 2 looks quite nice. However if you compare it to Cineasia's Dragons Forever DVD (remastered from a HD source) the DVD still wins. In fact if CineAsia continues with their HD DVD remasters including Wheels on Meals it'd put the asia blurays to shame for good. I dunno why they don't release their catalogue on bluray though <_< Reading DVD subtitles sucks!

Accidental Spy went to bluray quite nicely but then again its a pretty newish movie
  • Only one I have is Hard Boiled. love that movie
    :ninja:
  • I found that movie "okay" but found it hard to watch again in terms of replay value, I prefer The Killer since it had more story going for it. Loved the opening theme music though

Also I found that the infamous "dubtitles" ruins the translation of Hard Boiled. HKL should've got their hands on it rather than Dragon Dynasty
  • Has anyone seen Hapkido (1972) or Dragon from Russia (1990)?

I'm considering getting these for $7 each, the first one has the chick from Fist of Fury (playing Bruce Lee's sister) and the movie has much less story/charisma but apparently some mind blowing fight scenes. However as much as I like action I generally get bored if there's nothing but action

Dragon from Russia is based off the Crying Freeman manga and has the sexy Maggie Cheung yet apparently the movie is poorly edited & can get boring but I'm interested for the manga adaption itself
  • Wasn't there a shoddy live action remake of Crying Freeman starring Mark Dacascus?
  • Yup there was, in 1995. I've never seen it though so I'm guessing its not worth watching?

Also I'd really like to track down HKL's Michelle Yeoh's Police Assassins, Wing Chun & Magnificent Warriors but aside from Amazon's marketplace (which seems a bit risky to me) I can't get them anywhere else :(
  • Watched 'Story of Ricky' today, easily one of the best early HK flicks! Adapted from a manga story and basically features a live version of 'Fist of the North Star' but set in a prison where there's superhuman people

Great music & a good story too, a bit simplistic maybe but the pace never drops so you're entertained from start to finish. This movie was actually banned in many countries because of its violence, its very over-the-top which includes exploding heads but unlike Saw it didn't leave me cringing. Story of Ricky stands together with City Hunter where both have lots of replay value due to having just the right amount of weirdness

I'm halfway through Eastern Condors now too, its good although a tad boring at times, I've never been a big fan of jungle films though. Personally I think its been way overhyped
