What are you doing?
  • Revised thread since the other one was lost

Atm I'm watching a few items on ebay, hoping that people will bid on it so I can get rid of them :P Some are incredibly bulky like furniture that requires pickup

I had an Antec P180 case sitting in the garage for almost 2 years, thought about just throwing it out since its got broken front USB ports but its already up to $61 atm :D Sometimes I get very surprised by some of my auctions like the original Star Wars DVD trilogy which fetched $82 - that's about $10 more than what I paid for it brand NEW!
  • Watching my son practice his stick skills for hockey practice tonight.
  • Working :(

Actually I'm pretending to work.  Writing Australia just announced an unpublished manuscript competition for all adult-genre novels from unpublished writers.  I've decided to try for it, but that means I have to re-write a 110,000 word novel by Oct 12th.  So while I have various SharePoint windows up on ym screen I also have Word open in one corner while I write.
  • I am now reading the two books my sons (IE, the wife) got me for father's day.  A 4x4 road atlas of AUstralia and a guide to Victoria's campsites.  Lovely.
  • Uninstalled everything from my LianLi case to put into my new Fractal R3 case (wanted something a bit more stylish with more focus on sound dampening than cooling)

Took me about 6 hours, 5 hours last night until I couldn't do anymore due to shitty PC case manual instructions (wouldn't tell me how I should install the HDDs into the trays, an hour later I figured out that it had to be screwed underneath - not on the sides like 99% of PC cases). Then I gave up that night because of shitty lighting conditions & an all-black case interior & I was hungry & tired

This morning was slightly less painful & only took me an hour, added the power LEDs, speaker cable & unlabeled PCIE cable into the graphics card & I was good to go aside from a BIOS error that I fixed with reorganising the primary boot device (must've switched HDDs). Its all good now :)

This was the first time I'd taken everything apart completely & attempted to put back together by myself so I'm pretty pleased with that. Unfortunately PC cases are still a bitch to install when there's PSU cables everywhere, hopefully they'll get smaller & thinner one day like the accomplishment from IDE to SATA cables
  • I found the holes on the back plate very handy for cabling. I have a few wires from the front inputs onto the motherboard and sound card, the power for gfx card and the CPU cable.

Unfortunately it wasn't long enough to feed around the back and to the top. Think I'll be some extensions in the future. The R3 is a nice case. Although I have been having weird stability problems these last three days. Last night I took it all apart and out it back together. I think it's ok now - I may not have secured the cooler tight enough.

Ran a stress test fir a few hours without problems fingers crossed because I need to play deus ex HR some more!!!
  • Also, my fiancee s on holiday in Nice with a friend so I am a bachelor for the week. Wall to wall strippers at my house at the moment.

Did I type strippers? I meant to type lists of chores.

  • The holes are alright & there are a lot of them although some where I attempted to reach around the top of the motherboard were too small to fit a PSU cable which is what I wanted to do instead of going around the graphics card everytime :P Also the rubber cabling holes fell off very easily

I guess the main problem is, is that my PSU isn't customisable. You can't take out anything that you don't need as its stuck in the hole (I should've checked it before buying - its a brand new PSU as well). My old Antec can do that, why did Seasonic have to make a PSU for dummies? I've got about 4 cables I don't need so I have to nestle them at the base which gets in the way of my SATA connectors & front cables

If I was able to detach the unneeded PSU cables & didn't require additional PCIE connectors for the graphics card the case would be a LOT tidier & would probably reduce heat
  • Yeah....my PSU is about a year old and I had to buy it in an emergency so didn't really research PSUs much.  Modular all the way next time.  If I buy an extendion for the CPU power leads my case would be much much tidier.
  • I lol'd at my graphics card, it gives you 2 additional PCIE connectors but since I couldn't customise the the PSU they were both useless & I had to use ones with shitty additional adapters that I don't need
  • Working out how best to juggle my life.
Thing may have taken an unexpected change and I need to figure out how to manage everything.
  • That sounds cryptic.......unexpected change you say?
  • My PC is fecked i think.  Monitor keeps freezing and restarting.  It was even freezing in the BIOS menu.

It froze on the windows start up recovery screen and I thought the boot up had stalled.  However, through my speakers I heard the window chime!  While the screen was locked on the screen where you select safe mode I could even type my password in blind and log into windows?!

When it crashes I hear a double click noise which I think is coming from the GPU :(  I have replaced it with a really old Radeon card that has 256mb of ram for testing!

  • I hope its not related to the R3 case! :P

Could be graphics card related, don't motherboards nowadays have a very basic graphics engine where you can run Windows without a graphics card? (kinda like like they also have built-in audio so you don't need to buy a soundcard). You could try taking out the graphics card & see what happens

  • Aye....think its more to do with Sandybridge CPUs?  Maybe I don't know.  Unfortunately...my mobo doesn't have a display out.
  • I had a look at the back of mine & couldn't see one (found about 10x USB ports instead :P). Either they phased them out or its only with certain models with budget in mind

Whilst looking at the back of it I also noticed that for the past few years I've actually had my speaker input placed into my motherboard, not my 4 year X-Fi Extreme soundcard! No wonder I could never get it working, I feel so stupid now considering how often I fiddle around with it

Sounds soooo much better now even though I have pretty pissweak speakers (Gigaworks T40). I watch a lot of blurays too so sound is pretty damn important
