  • Sorry. I know it's the wrong thread but I don't think the search function us working with the iPhone mod.

With ME2 can I install the second disc negating the need for disc swapping?
  • From what I remember you still need to swap the disc when you get to a certain point but you can install it to keep disc noise and load times down.
  • Mass Effect 3 is getting a cooperative, horde-style multiplayer mode.

"Rest assured, it's nothing of what you've feared." That's what Mass Effect 3 executive producer Casey Hudson said via Facebook when the game's cooperative online multiplayer mode was announced. This brought a sigh of relief to some, while others cringed at seeing "Mass Effect" and "multiplayer" so close together. At the Electronic Arts Vegas Game Show earlier this year, we got to try this mode for ourselves, as well as speak with BioWare general manager Aaryn Flynn about the game in general, which you can see in the video.

From what we've gathered, the fate of pretty much everything in Mass Effect 3 will rest on the galaxy's readiness level. This is a representation of how well Shepard has prepared the entire galaxy for the coming battle. It can also be influenced in several ways, one of which is the new multiplayer mode. This cooperative, four-player online mode drops players into a horde-mode-style area where they must battle against increasingly difficult waves of enemies.

Your personal commander Shepard won't be available here; he (or she) is much too busy romancing aliens and punching reporters. Instead, a new character must be created from the game's most humanoid races--Asari, Turian, Drell, Krogan, Salarian, and human--and established classes. Your character's abilities are tied to his or her class (there are no racial abilities), and which weapons you bring is up to you. However, your class will determine firearm proficiency.

We were assigned a human infiltrator for our play session, which took place on the industrial-looking slums map. In multiplayer, the map you choose determines the set of enemies you will face. For this map, it was all Cerberus commandos; others may include the insectoid Collectors or a combination of different groups for a greater challenge. Back in the slums, we found that shooting people in multiplayer wasn't different from single-player. Some enemies carried massive shields that required one of our team to act as a distraction while the other sneaked up behind the foe. And when a massive Atlas mech suit landed, it was an all-hands-on-deck moment where we had to quickly bring the brute down.

Special objectives were interspersed throughout the match. During one wave, we had to run across the map and disable four enemy devices. Another required us to group up in an area and defend it while uploading data. Despite our best efforts, our character would get taken out after one-too-many space bullets to the face. When our character went down, we could frantically press a button to postpone death. Of course, this became more difficult, and by the time the second unit arrived, we simply couldn't maintain it any longer. Dying took us out of the current wave and into spectator mode. We could then return at the start of the next wave, assuming our teammates lived that long.

Killing enemies and completing objectives earn your character money and experience. Money is used to purchase and upgrade weapons, while experience increases your character's level. At a certain point in your character's progression, you will have the option to export him or her into your single-player. There, you can use your character as a war asset on the Galaxy at War map. How exactly these characters will function in your campaign remains to be seen.

Despite the fact that this is a cooperative mode, you're not required to have three friends to play. In fact, we could have played with two, one, or even zero teammates if we were so inclined. The game wouldn't have granted us any AI teammates, but it would have adjusted the enemy difficulty accordingly. Or you can just ignore the mode entirely. There will be other ways to raise your galaxy's readiness level, and the optimal ending is available without having to touch multiplayer. Mass Effect 3 will be released on March 6, 2012, on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.

  • There's going to be a demo sometime early next year giving a taste of both single and multiplayer
  • Apparently, I will be getting access to it.  A little flyer came  with my copy of Battlefield 3.
  • I haven't played the demo yet (it's out now, fact fans). I don't think I want the intro spoiled, even though I kinda already know what happens.

Anyway, I'm a little deflated by the whole thing. Firstly, that ME3 will force me to sign up and use EA's Origin, even if I buy a physical copy (and it won't appear on Steam ever, unless Origin completely dies in the meantime) and now it transpires that this multiplatform release won't support control pads on the PC, which is ridiculous when you consider the Xbox version is supporting sodding Kinect of all things!

It's tempting to abandon the PC version and go for Xbox, but since I've carried "my" Shepard character this far, it would be a shame to conclude the saga playing as a stranger. Which then makes me consider just starting again from the beginning. Which then makes me reconsider getting any of the ME2 DLC, as I was going to buy it soon, but there's no point if I'm going to have to rebuy it for another format anyway. Which then makes me think "sod it, I don't care that much, so I'll probably just give it a miss".

I don't know if this is EA's fault, Bioware's fault, or me just being picky, but I'm thoroughly off-put by the whole shebang. *Slow sarcastic clapping*
  • I started watching bits of the ME3 demo on Youtube & then thought "Wtf am I doing?! This is spoiling the experience for me!" & quit watching after a couple of minutes

Also it sucks that it won't appear on Steam, that's how I got into Mass Effect originally when I saw ME2 for $5 (which is INSANELY cheap for such an awesome game!). Plus I much prefer the PC setup for this
  • I played the whole demo yesterday and loved it - using kinect for voice commands adds a nice layer to it. Combat was very similar to me2 which isn't a bad thing. Very interested in the coop stuff though, when it unlocks. I had such a food time with me1 and 2, this'll be a day1 purchase for me.
  • I'd like to see a game with sex scenes that has Kinect voice commands :P Would also work well in ME3 I'd imagine
  • Yeah but what if it didn't pick your voice up properly? "pull out, shepherd, pull out!!"
  • Shepherd: "Incoming!"
  • Aw, don't tell me ME3 will be Origin only?  I haven't completed ME2 yet (got miday through on Xbox then sold the console), but I was planning on getting them both through Steam.

Much as I hate piracy, I hate Origin more.
  • Yup, crappy Origin only! I think it'll have a nasty effect on their digital sales. I'm still in a "Hmm, I dunno what platform to get" phase. Also apparently the PS3 version has an average of 20fps, saw the comparison and it looks VERY choppy when compared to the smooth Xbox version - even in relatively simple environments with 2 people walking down a corridor its hideous
  • I felt the same about Origin and BF3. In actuality I barely notice Origin now. Steam is much better but obviously has been around a good while longer. I'm buying mine (eventually) from www.ziip.co.uk. It's a bunch of people I play BF3 with, good fast service.

They give you an option to have download code emailed out before dispatching retail box to you. I've lately felt more comfortable having a physical copy these days in case of HDD failures etc. saves on the downloads a bit.
  • It's not so much that I dislike Origin as a platform, although it is bloatware and soaks up memory usage (IE, is crap), than I really do not like being dictated to how I can buy a product.
