Anime recommend-me-do
  • SO the other day I thought 'You know what, I don't watch enough anime'.  There was a bit more to it than that, I'll admit, but that was the basic crux.

So, those who know, recommend me some anime.  I've seen, ooh, Akira, Laptua and that's about it so feel free to go mad.
  • Well you can add most of the Studio Ghibli titles for starters :P

    Movies:

Howl's Moving Castle, Ghost in the Shell, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Porco Rosso, Paprika, Sword of the Stranger, Patlabor 1 & 2, Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust

    Series:

Full Metal Alchemist / Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood (the former if you prefer some standalone eps inbetween the story), Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Samurai 7 (loosely based on Seven Samurai), Paranoia Agent

I don't watch as much anime as I used to, mainly because the stuff that comes out nowadays is pretty crap in comparison to the mid 90s-00s & its over reliance on CG. I can also think of other good series but not sure if you'd like them, some have sexual references
  • How strange.  I had a sudden urge last night for some anime too.  Went to dig up my DVD of Ghost in the Shell and Akira.  Sadly it seems my Akira DVD is missing!!!  Does anyone remember 3 x 3 eyes?  I used to love that series of films.  Although I think it was Fist of the North Star that first opened my eyes to anime.  Princess Mononoke is a great film, not sure which I prefer that or Spirited Away.

I am not an expert but I agree with backslash...there seems to be a shed load of crap out there too.  Guyver anyone?!
  • Are you saying Guyver is crap? :P Note: I haven't watched it

I remember 3x3 Eyes, though I watched the local aussie version which was probably butchered. Oh! Armitage III the OVA is awesome :D Watch the actual 4 part series, not the movie. They're essentially the same but the movie is a chopped up combination & then they redubbed some of the roles with more well-known people. Think Blade Runner, Armitage III is a tad like that. And watch Trigun! :D And Berserk! Berserk is pretty violent though & gets a bit sickening in the later episodes

Also I remember Fist of the North Star, lots of heads exploding from fist punching

Nadesico is similar to Neon Genesis Evangelion in some ways although requires some japanese knowledge since the humour can get pretty weird. But the story's awesome. Excel Saga is great although once again, the humour is pretty crazy & fast paced :P Desert Punk is also great but there's lots of big bouncing boobs. Same with Full Metal Panic, relying on fan service on occasions
  • What is full metal alchemist about then?
  • I'll just do a bit of copy paste :P

Set in a fictional universe in which alchemy is one of the most advanced scientific techniques known to man, the story follows the brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric, who want to restore their bodies after a disastrous failed attempt to bring their mother back to life through alchemy during their childhood.

Its an anime that'll appeal to all ages, its a mature series yet knows when to balance comedy into it. There's lots of great characters, twists, great action & drama

Perhaps a trailer would be better :P

    FullMetal Alchemist Commercial

And here's the opening credits of Brotherhood (watch it from the 45 second mark if you want to see some of the other characters + action)

    Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood Opening 1

Seriously guys this series should be on your number 1 priority list! :) The animation remains high quality throughout & if you combine both series there's 120 episodes to watch. Brotherhood is a proper adaption of the manga whereas the original series starts off similar but goes into a different storyline yet both are equally entertaining however Brotherhood is in widescreen & always keeps you on edge wanting more. Also if you can, watch it with japanese audio
  • Watch Crying Freeman. Its tops. Theres one of the best "Ill get you as you run away" moves ever  - he basically slides along the floor with a guysface, by jumpingg on his back and grabbing his hair. Very cool. They made a shite live action movie of it too..
  • If only I could find episodes to download somewhere......it's so difficult to get into an anime series there are always a million episodes to watch.  I started watching Naruto at one point and that just got stupid.

Also Naruto isn't really a good series since its an ongoing manga that never ends & whenever it catches up to the manga they put on fillers that last for 26 eps or more. Same as Bleach. Bleach has an awesome first 3 seasons, then goes onto a couple of fillers, then back to story, then more fillers

If you were to watch only the first 3 seasons of Bleach (think its 78 eps or 72) then you'd be satisfied & actually enjoyed it
  • Well...I may have found somewhere N that has Z all the episodes B in one file... ;)
  • The only anime films I have in my collection are the 2 famous ones - Spirited Away & Princess Mononoke
  • Alrighty, loads to go on, thanks!

I'd heard that Ghost in the shell was good, and that the TV series was better by an order of magnitude than the movie, so I'm getting those.  Watched GitS last night and was impressed, although it left open mroe questions than I would like, so I'm up for the next one.

I saw half of Spirited away not long ago on TV and wasn't that impressed.  Maybe I just needed the second half.
  • Go with Bleach, Mike tis most awesome!!
    Gurren Lagaan is good also.

Until you reach filler hell :P Better to stick with the first 3 seasons

Also Gurren Lagann is good (but very weird for a newcomer to anime) and imo has a terrible 2nd half when it skips a few years
  • Bleach has just got going again with the Ichigo v Ulquiorra fight......

and the manga is brilliant the now, Mugetsu haha awesome
  • Currently making my way through Ghost in the Shell animated series.  Very, very good. So far, much better than the films, which weren't bad.  Can't wait to see where they're going with the story line.
