Review the latest movie you've seen
-
Rather than roaming around between threads looking for "Oh, what did this person think of that movie" I thought it'd be a lot easier if we just had 1 thread for pure and simple film reviews. You don't have to do much, just share your opinions and dish out a score (if applicable)
Here's my latest reviews:
The Number 23
I find it strange that this doesn't have an average of 23 instead of 24 on Metacritic. Wish I saw the reviews first but the impression 'The West Australian' newspaper gave it as a preview did sound like an interesting concept and possibly a twisted but compelling movie. Jim Carrey returns after an average comedy remake of 'Fun with d*ck & Jane' to star in this movie and plays as an animal controller. Ace Ventura anyone? It starts off like that in a subtle comedy manner but then he discovers this book 'The Number 23' and notices that everything that's in the book reflects similar things from his early childhood.
The book basically talks about a detective who becomes consumed by the number 23, then when Walter (Carrey) thinks about it, there's a lot of stuff that adds up to 23. His driver's license, the date he was born, the day he met his wife, etc. Soon he becomes consumed by the number 23 too, just like the detective in the book. But what does it all add up too? Seriously there aren't many surprises in this movie, 23 is just a number and will always be a number - there isn't any twisted evil behind it. It's rather just a guy who has too much time on his hands and thinks "Hey, if you take 17 away from the number 40 on my letterbox, that adds up to 23 too! OMG! WTF?!"
The movie itself looks good, some creepy cinematic moments and with a believable performance from the cast. In the end though you'll realise that the movie is boring and the story doesn't reach to any climactic outcomes.

Curse of the Golden Flower
Already released on DVD in the US but only just screening in cinemas locally this week - go figure. It's the latest movie from Zhang Yimou (director of House of Flying Daggers and Hero) who tries to blend martial arts with soap opera. I was disappointed with this, perhaps it's because I couldn't bother reading the subtitles this time around and stuck with the very average dub.
The richly detailed city and clothing is over the top - there can be such a thing as too much detail that it attempts to cover up for what it lacks. With every room containing golden imagery it looks too samey and takes up 3/4 of the movie. If you don't pay attention to the conversations you can easily lose the plot. Basically it's about betrayal and family matters. The action scenes whilst okay don't show up until the final few remaining minutes and feel "been there, done that".
If you like your action films and enjoyed House of Flying Daggers, Hero and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - be very cautious of this new film. It's one of this year's yawners

Hot Fuzz.
Nice no-brainer of a movie, with wicked action and British humour. If you've seen it once though, you probably don't want to see it again.
8 out of 10. -
Buffalo Soldiers
Black comedy charting the mis-adventures of an American soldier stationed in cold war Germany.
8/10 -
Sunshine
Contendor for film of the year. Superb tension, excellent acting and brilliantly directed. If the screenwriter for this film - Alex Garland's - script for Halo is anything as good as this then that film will be stunning.
9/10 -
If you want to see it in the cinema then you'll need to get a move on. A lot of places have already stopped their showings. Apparently it hasn't performed too well at the box office. Although it has yet to be released in the US.

The Goonies.
Eighties adventure movie in which a group of teenagers go off in search of lost pirate treasure after finding an old map all the while pursued by wanted criminals with an eye for the treasure themselves.
Every bit as good as you remember it being.

Bit harsh on Borat. It had some great moments. Right about Snakes on a Plane though. Poor film, and it has Keenan from "Keenan and Kel" in it. WTF?!
Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny has been watched a lot upon purchase. Idiotic comedy musical-genius gold! -
The Illusionist, starring Ed Norton.
Crap. Wants to be clever and fails miserably. Just watch the Open University. Much more entertaining. -

Borat has some funny moments, but just as many that misfired. It also relies on mocking people who dont realise that they are being mocked, and are just trying to be friendly and I've really gone off this sort of comedy lately. -

New Police Story
Look! It's Jackie Chan in a new Hong Kong movie! This is miles better than his american crap (barring the ace Shanghai Noon and Knights) Chan actually gets the opportunity to flex his acting ability, something he hasn't done since the original Police Story back in the 80's. Plus it's surprisingly violent for Chan who nowadays you just see as a kid friendly entertainer. Basically it's about Chan's character who is now a drunk after having his entire team killed in a botched operation. So it's all about his return to GET REVENGE! The only problem are the villains. With the exception of one of the team who has an amazing fight with Chan in Legoland they're all a bunch of extreme sport junkies. They even like violent video games turning their cop killing antics into an online game. This is probably Jack Thompson's favourite film ever. It's pretty good though. Worth a look if you're into this sort of thing.

I saw 'New Police Story' a couple of years and despite it receiving some awards for highest grossing chinese action movie or something I felt the action scenes didn't have the same impact when compared to his earlier films. I guess it's because nowadays he actually thinks about health insurance. Overall it seemed pretty average but luckily it wasn't as bad as Jackie Chan's 'The Myth', a disappointing action/comedy follow-up from the director of 'Rumble in the Bronx'.
*sighs* Let's hope Rush Hour 3 goes in the right direction -
Spiderman 3
Just came back from watching the movie, it was good but only in the action scenes. I felt that the performances were just 'okay' and I didn't buy that whole emo Parker thing. It was pretty horrific, a combination of bad directing really and just seemed really stupid, killing the whole 'Spiderman is now a darker character' theme. Also dubbing Kirsten Dunst's voice for her Broadway show would've been okay if it wasn't for the dubber's 40 year old voice.
Plot wise, it seemed to jump all over the place, characters appeared in and out of nowhere with no explanation of where they'd been hiding that whole time. Too many flashbacks imo too. I guess it's helpful to those who forgot what happened previously but seriously, what is this, a tv show?
The cast eventually got too big as well with some of the key enemy characters only appearing in the last 20minutes after some 80minutes of nothing. Not a terrific movie but not a bad one either. However, it's probably the worst in the series.
I give this movie 3 spiders out of 5.
