No longer can some games be categorised into just FPS, RPG, Action, Adventure, Puzzle, etc. Especially as so many of them no take many elements from all of them and there is no way that Gamestyle will refer to a game as a FPRPGPAA (First Person Role Playing Game with Puzzle and Action Adventure). It is games such as Borderlands and Fallout that have really blurred those lines (along with many others of course).
RAGE is another game that takes elements from so many various genres and packs them into one massive package. There are elements from First Person Shooters, RPGs, Racing, Sandbox and likely more.
Players take the role of a survivor of a meteor impact in 2029, the only survivor in-fact, as the Ark in which he was holed up had malfunctioned and conveniently killed off everyone bar him. What the player will find though is that there are many pockets of survivors and that they have set up settlements across the land. All very Fallout thus far.
The world has descended into various factions, human survivors, who have to defend their homes and settlements from bandits and mutants. Then there are many other hostile factions to worry about, that will all no doubt be integral to the story as players progress.
Navigation around the world is where a lot of fun could come in as players can get their paws on vehicles, such as dune-buggies, which are perfect for traversing the harsh environment. The vehicles the player gets can be upgraded and have weapons added and races can also be competed in, which will likely see players rewarded with further upgrades and currency. There is also set to be weapon customisation and potential RPG elements within the game, however at the time of writing, these had yet to be detailed.
RAGE will run on iD's id Tech 5 engine and in all the videos, screenshots and gameplay demos released so far, it has looked nothing short of stunning and at times it makes Fallout look last gen. It is a game set in a post apocalyptic world, so expect to see plenty of brown and run down looking areas, but it is a testament to the art team that they have managed to still make it look so good.
There have been two multiplayer modes detailed for RAGE so far, Combat Rally and Legends of the Wasteland. Combat Rally sees players make use of the vehicles, as they take on their opponents in a checkpoint race that also encourages them to destroy their opponents. Legends of the Wasteland is a series of Co-Op missions that are separate to the main single player experience, but will be referenced as players progress.
There is plenty to be excited about with RAGE and with the might of Bethesda and iD behind it, anticipation levels continue to grow. RAGE will be released on October 7th on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
