The sequel will take a jump from PC only to join the console world with Alice Madness Returns hitting both the Xbox 360 and PS3. The story will take place 11 years after the original venture into wonderland which is the same number of years for the sequel to be released. After being put into care of a psychiatrist, Alice was deemed stable for the better part of a decade, now the memories and images return to haunt and unhinge her which sets the madness to come to life once again.
The story starts off with Alice living in Victorian London where Alice lives and so far the developers have showcased a number of videos showing visually beautiful Wonderlands as well as the darker gothic versions which players of the original will be familiar with. With the power of next-gen consoles hopefully they will be able to give players a rich beautiful environment along with the possibility of the unique story of the predecessor.
Like the original the sequel will be a 3rd person perspective with action styled combat. American McGee has stated that they have taken inspiration from classic games such as Zelda right up to Bioshock and Half-life to base their mechanics on this time round. Although they have decided to do this fans of the original need not fear that it will be unrecognisable, they understand that a lot of the original game was what made it such a cult phenomenon and therefore wish to give that back to the fans just as they remember it, just with a little more kick.
Alice has never had the potential to offer a multiplayer element and Alice Madness Returns will remain the same, a single player throughout. It has be stated though that players can look forward to Downloadable Content (DLC) for the game. The DLC will range from dresses that Alice can wear to enhance abilities and other in-game items. Hopefully this will also mean that players can look forward to DLC expansions for the game story as well since current generation game players appear to love the access to DLC.
A notable piece of information about the game is that creator American McGee is now and has been for a number of years lived in Shangai, China where the game was developed from scratch. This means that it will be the first major western-published game created entirely in China, whether this means that we will see some western elements in the game the gaming world shall have to wait and see.
For those of the gaming world that have not played the original they will receive a free code with new copies of Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game to download the classic version. With the original having been such a success there is much hype and hope that the sequel will be up to the standards of the twisted fairytale that we all know and love.
