Japan traditionally fuses unique elements to create something truly original, whether its music, film or video games, the need to experiment seems part of their psyche. Such experiments can often fall apart almost soon after they begin yet on the odd occasion the end result can be worthwhile. Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love is the fifth instalment in the series that has been a strong performer in Japan shifting over 3 million copies since its debut. So Long, My Love represents the first time Sakura Wars has been released outside of Japan, so this appearance is long overdue. This instalment was originally developed for the PlayStation 2 and released in 2005, which admittedly is quite a delay! The unique selling point of the series is its combination of strategy and dating simulation, yes thats an original fusion.Set in alternate 1920s reality, its a time of war and fittingly the game takes place in America (a first for the series) that will hopefully provide players with some familiarity. The game is broken down into eight chapters, which its promised will take around 4-5 hours each to complete. A warlord is expanding his empire and your team must prevent his evil expansion plans as you are shipped off to the States. We would spend more time with the storyline but as you can appreciate its totally barmy featuring a samurai cowgirl, a biker gang and lots of potential dates if you play your cards right. Variety is promised with the ability to control seven characters and see events unfold through their own perspective. Its not a totally alien experience as for the first few hours you are carefully guided and introduced to the elements that have made the series so successful. Such a tactic was effectively employed in the Persona series and while you may be champing at the bit to get going, at least youll hit the ground running when the restraints are released. The choices and relationships you make will shape future events in the story, so its worth considering your actions, as six endings are available. The combat element of the game is based on the traditional Mecha and with the title being developed from the team behind the wonderful Valkyria Chronicles, you should know what to expect. The twist is that romance at work is very much encouraged as you can form bonds with your fellow pilots and use such relationships to launch duo attacks. Gamestyle welcomes Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love to the Nintendo Wii. At the very worst its an excuse to dust off the console and play something that doesnt involve mini-games or keeping fit. Yet well wager than the final game will be an essential purchase given the lack of competition currently experienced on the Wii.
