Uncharted 2: Among Thieves preview

We loved the first Uncharted game. It had character, charm and managed to beat the game it was so obviously inspired by, that being Tomb Raider. So after what seemed like an age a sequel has been confirmed as in the works and all we’ve really seen so far are two cinematic trailers. The developers Naughty Dog though are promising big things.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

The first Uncharted followed the story of Sir Francis Drake as his fictional descendant, Nathan Drake, must solve a centuries old mystery. The sequel follow this somewhat by basing the premise another old adventurer, Marco Polo. Primarily for the lost ships of his which went missing when he was travelling home to Italy. Joining Nathan Drake on his quest will be the new female sidekick Chloe Frazer (voiced by Claudia Black of Farscape fame). She has big boots to fill after Elena (from the first Uncharted) was one of the very few female game characters that actually felt believable and was neither sexed up nor an irritating whiny mess. Intriguingly Naughty Dog have neither denied or confirmed that Elena, or for that matter the other sidekick Sully, make an appearance. The only alarming thing were hearing is the introduction of new stealth gameplay. This could go either way. On the one hand it could offer a new strategic way to approach confrontations, but on the other it could mean constant restarts with Nathan being riddled with bullet holes after being spotted once. Were hoping its the former and doesnt try to overcomplicate things and try to emulate Splinter Cell or Metal Gear Solid 4.Another new feature being touted is the climbing mechanic which has now been changed to allow free movement over walls. We arent completely sure what that means, but were youre no longer limited to climbing across obviously signposted rock formations and instead can make your own way through the level. This is just a guess, though were hoping what weve said is true. Finally were also promised no loading screens with the way to avoid this being probably a lengthy install.Only screenshots have been so far, but the two movies release are intriguing in their own way. The first showing a blood covered Nathan Drake with some sort of dagger while in the snow covered mountains. A nice change of scenery to the jungle locales of the first. The second shown off at the Spike VGAs just showed your typical Drake wit (once again performed brilliantly by Nolan North) as a train carriage dangles precariously over a cliff. It certainly leaves us wanting more. What weve seen so far is hardly substantial, hopefully the first actual gameplay clips arent far away. But if what is being promised is turned into a reality then Drakes second outing is set to eclipse his first by quite some margin.
