Printed games magazines - is there still a point?
« on: 03 March 2010 at 09:08am »
When I first got home internet access, there was suddenly much less need for me to keep buying OPS2, because all the info I'd read already online. I still bought it if I liked the look of the demo disc -- but now that we have PSN et al, there's no longer any need for this; we can just download demos. Plenty of people might not have their consoles online, but surely this number can only decrease?

How often do you buy games magazines? Does the portability outweigh the rapid information decay?

I just cancelled my Edge sub.  Everything I need I get from here without even having to go looking for it.

:D

I haven't picked up a magazine in ages.

If you filter out the crap, the Internet is fine for information and opinions.

I buy PC powerplay for some light toilet reading, but that's it.

I tend to buy magazine for toilet time still. Other than that, I get what I need from the internet.

I can't figure out how to cancel my Edge sub! Can only UK ppl do it? I'm stuck for another 6 odd months otherwise, the amount of content I want to read gets thinner & thinner. The reviews don't even make sense anymore & thanks to them having no humour at all at anytime its a chore to read rather than fun & factual

I find myself reading Hyper every now & then (AU gaming mag) which is much better than Edge & its also much better than gathering info from the internet. Plus I really do hate using excessive amounts of internet, everything nowadays always has some screen attached to it, just give me some paper stapled together once in a while! Makes me feel like less of a zombie

I've never bought a console mag, but I get PC mags quite often. 'Custom PC' is my current favourite

There isn't much point to printed magazines nowadays for videogames when almost everyone has access to online reviews and therefore video footage, even on the move.

I cancelled my Edge a couple of years ago and haven't missed it.

I do subscribe to Little White Lies and Sight & Sound but for the quality of their writing and insightful articles which are pretty rare qualities in any gaming mag.

If you guys had more international mags you might find something that interests you because really, Edge is just a big turd overall. If it were interesting, then maybe you would miss it :P

I also read e-zine's AU's Pixel Hunt from time to time
http://pixelhunt.com.au/
Free to download, comes in a widescreen format and has 60-80 pages of goodness once every couple of months. Its a bit like D-Pad but a bit more casual & fun to read

We did the GSO Offline issues for a few years - heck of amount of work went into those for exclusive content.

Do appreciate how time consuming it is to produce something of that quality. Would be cool to try and bring em to life again along with the podcast.
