Do you download...
« on: 21 January 2010 at 06:44pm »
.....y'know..... illegally?  Anything, I'm just wondering.

Being totally honest, I do, but not much.  If a song comes on the radio I like, I'll download it, but just that song, and honestly I wouldn't have bought it anyway.  I'm not trying to justify myself, I'm just saying that they publisher/artist has lost zero money.

But again today I read how some people, strangely enough from the music publishing industry, claiming on-line piracy will create am articitic wasteland.  I've never found this argument holds water.  After studying the music industry in uni I know the only people who make money in the industry are the publishers and retailers, the artists rank lower then the guy who presses their own CDs in the pecking order.  The way I see it if anything the idea of music being free again will bring soul back to it again.  Instead of a huge money making operation we'll have musicians out there who care more about their craft and aren't drawn by the possibility of owning a huge house in LA.

I have done (used to use Kazaa and Bearshare - do they still exist?), but haven't done for a while. I would say its because I'm a lawyer, but it's not that really. It's probably with being too poor to up my download limit to accommodate!

I used to... but a few things have killed it off for me:

I just don't like 'new' films/tv shows anymore, so I've lost the desire to waste precious bandwidth downloading something I'm probably not going to like.  I'd rather wait for a bluray/dvd to drop in price at amazon/play/somewhere.com

Things like Last.fm and Spotify have replaced my desire for buying music or downloading MP3's.  I can listen to anything at anytime, it's instant, it doesn't take up HDD space and it's better than the radio.  My Portable MP3 player is mostly used for Podcasts now.

I will never download movies as it's my idustry really and I know the damage it does there. Also the first impression you have of a film is very important. I don't really like downloads of music anyway, Cd's all the way for me.

If you dont want to wait months , years, or never for some TV shows to be played on terrestrial TV then downloading them is the way to go.

I used to download loads illegally - but if I liked what I've downloaded, I'd buy a legal copy. Nowadays it works the other way around - if there's a legal way to purchase it, I'll buy it - if not, I'm climbing aboard the pirate ship.

Currently, I 'illegally' download:

Albums that I've purchased on vinyl and don't have a digital copy of. (frequently)
Albums that I'll play once and never again. If I like it, I'd buy it. (rarely)
TV Shows that I've missed on TV that aren't on iPlayer / 4oD (rarely)
TV Shows that aren't available in this country (rarely)
Movies that aren't at the cinema anymore yet haven't been released in the UK on DVD or Xbox Live rental (sometimes)
Software that I can't afford to pay for but want / need. (sometimes)

As I said though, in most cases, if there's a legal route of purchasing the product - I will do.

I stream the Ice Hockey. I will continue to do so until I can subscribe to Fox Sports Detroit on the internet.
I download films, if I like them I buy them
I download TV as I hate waiting for it to show in the UK

I do but only for things I wouldn't consider purchasing, ranging from cinema tickets for crappy movies to DVDs to anime to tv series. Sometimes its because we don't get it here soon enough. For games I rarely ever bother, especially PC games which don't really seem worth it "edit this registry file, replace this DLL file, turn your internet off, patch it, don't update it" etc & then in the end it usually doesn't work and you've wasted 3 days of trial & eror.

I've also got a thing similar to an R4 for my DSi but I use it for games I'd rarely ever play, some of it multiplayer related

So yeah, if I like something enough, I'll buy it, otherwise I'd much rather save my money

I download stuff that's out of print or otherwise can't be bought any more. David Clayton Thomas' album Harmony Junction, for example (the record company it was released on no longer exists). If it comes on sale again I'll buy a legit copy.

I very seldomly download a film and I get my Music fix from the likes of Spotify and Last.Fm but I have to admit I do download TV Shows quite regulary. Now it isn't a case of me being a bit tight as I pay for a digital TV service with Virgin Media, but I like to watch my favourite shows in my own time, sometimes away from home on the laptop and free from the distraction of ad breaks.

Not sure if this is morally wrong or not as maybe I could wait for DVD/Blu Ray box-sets but there is usually a six months wait for these...

I used to download a lot but not so much anymore these days.  Mostly because I feel like Ive already downloaded everything that is of interest to me.     Im kinda like Rogue Soul, most of the newer stuff doesnt appeal to me and the older stuff I have pretty much covered.  Btw, how come the big companies never mention that most downloads only happen out of boredom and "because I can" - not because the person had a serious interest in it? In other words, the person would have never bought it anyway even in a no-download world.  Hence there was no loss in revenue.  Yet thats exactly what the big guys try to tell us.  Ah well. . . .

There was. French study which said that those that downloaded on a regular basis actually spent more on ip than the average consumer. I honestly think it's mostly fear and greed from the ip owners which bring on these knee jerk reactions rather then careful 'ok this could effect our income stream' careful panned decision.

I'm watching it on the Sky3 Free weekend. Not bad, never got around to Band of Brothers. I'm just not up to speed with all this US drama which is practically constant. Shame UK drama is pretty much dead in comparison.
