Just got Firemint Real Racing for my ipod touch and just wanted to recommend it. Im shocked at how good it is for a mobile device game, the steering is done by tilting the device left or right, the graphics are on par with a psp racer, and you can sync all your data to a central server, and also take part in online leagues - very well setup online side. Just quickly ran this race to test out the replay upload function (you can choose to upload a certain replay and im guessing a central server somewhere renders it and does the upload - nice):

Any other recommendations for games on there? Ive got Doom too, and although its an app, Simplify Media 2 is excellent - I can stream any of my tracks on my home pc to the device, works flawlessly

I just got an iPhone (go me) and have been playing around in the app store, but I'm wondering what either people consider the core apps for their own phone?

For me I'm loving iFitness and mapmyrun.  Great trackers for your exercise.  I've also got Trailguru on there but I haven't taken my bike out yet to give it a try.

Um, other than Pocketweather (great for details weather info and radars) I haven't got anything else yet.  See, still new - so who else has got one?

I don't have an iPhone - but I do have an Android phone and most of the 'Official' apps cross over. So, here's some apps that I have or have used:

Flixster / Movies

I imagine the iPhone version works the same as the Android, but you can log in with your Facebook account and see all the latest movie showtimes, trailers, what's on near you, etc. You can rate the movies, see pictures, actor info, your friends ratings (based on Facebook friends) and everything. Excellent app for the movie buff!

Some people have this funny thing about location data - that they don't want people to know where they are. They're quite happy to post a status on Facebook or Twitter saying 'I'm in the Lake District. It's sunny here.', but then if there's a status which says 'I'm in the Lake District. It's sunny here. - [link to a map]' they freak out because people know you're not at home! No shit.

Anyway, if you're into location based updates, that's what Brightkite does. It will link your status updates to where you are in the world. You can also upload photos too! It syncs with Twitter, Facebook and Flickr too. Nice.

Another location-based app, but this time a game. You basically 'check in' at locations and every so often you'll get rewards (ie, visit a place three times and you become a 'local'). If you visit a place more than any other user, you become the Mayor of that place - but can have that stripped if someone is more of a regular than you are to that haunt. Syncs with Twitter.

Instant messaging on-the-go. It supports a wide array of accounts and you can sign into them individually, or create a Meebo account and link them altogether for a one-click sign in process.

Edit: Apparently Trillian is better than Meebo on the iPhone, says @dustinwilson - a man to be trusted!

Id really recommend getting Whatsapp messenger. Its a 59p app, that lets you message for free between iphone (wifi & 3g) and ipod touch (wifi, but uses your phones data plan somehow), so long as you have their mobile number. I love it, and use it as a quick chat anywhere app with skribble from on here. V good.

Also 360 Live is great too - you can login to your xboxlive account, see whose on-line, what they're doing and check other dashboard things like games etc. You can also message each other on it too - so you can be out and about and chat with mates on their xboxs to setup games or insult their mothers. iirc, this is free.

And ill say again, Simplify Media 2 is great for music anywhere - stream your home library to your device.

Just got GTA Chinatown wars - I "got" it last week, but felt guilty every time I loaded it up, so bought it this morning. Im finding that - even though my ipod is jailbroken, and setup to play downloaded games, Im not doing that, and am instead buying them properly. Especially with the iPad coming out and the ability to use software between the two, its a no brainer really.

Is GTA Chinatown Wars exactly the same as the DS version?

Yes, its a bit crisper and the textures are better. It is the full game that came out on the psp n ds, so for £5,99 you cant really go wrong.

I'm waiting for the iPhone to get cheaper. Since I don't really use mobiles to make calls (usually purely SMS and even that's only casual) I can't take advantage of any plans & have to buy it outright Shame because I really want one for its apps & occasional gaming if I'm out & bored

I'm on a 2 month contract with virgin for $50 a week, inc luding 300Mb of data.  I'd call that quite cheap.

I only spend about $30-50 on SMS a year (and no phonecalls unless my phoneline is dead), would this be a problem?

I have software to unlock an iPhone to any carrier. Its part of the latest jailbreak, installed via Cydia/Rock

Well I hate using my LG K-500 (I think?) phone - especially for SMS because its got a gimmicky touch screen for style for 6 buttons so navigating on an SMS usually causes it to send instead of move backwards, I've hung up calls accidentally thanks to a lack of a locking mechanism on the slider

An iPhone would be better because its 2 in 1 since I barely use my iPod nano

I used to be the same, but I've found so many uses for the iphone it's not funny.

I jailbroke my Iphone before 3.0 came out and it just was really really slow.  The freedom to tweak things was nice but there must have been some memory leaks or something as it would slow down all the time.  However, I have noticed that my iPhone is acting slow again even though it has the original firmware on.

I am going to wait for a new iPhone to be released before upgrading (I have standard 3G)
