Right i find out tomorrow if i can get Financing on one

Thinking of buying all the parts seprately from Overclockers

Fancy an I7 + Maybe a GTX 285? Thats all i have my mind set on atm, 4GB Corsair 2000mhz DDR3 ram ?

Just looking into it, how easy is it to watercool a pc?

Any help or advice appreciated

I realised the other day that I know nothing about hardware anymore... my computer died at the weekend and I've not even thought about fixing it yet. I'm sure it's just the RAM that's died or something.

Whatever the case, I think it might just be a good excuse to buy a new one.

The core i7 use triple channel memory so you'll want to get 3GB or 6GB (3x2GB)

My sentiments exactly. I just can't be arsed with it anymore. I think the same thing is happening with gadgetry in general for me.

What Korvaz said about water cooling - not worth it unless you're seriously OCing your system. It's easier and cheaper ot get a case with a fan or two, probably two, pre installed and getting an aftermarket cooling fan for the CPU.

Also what the guys said about 6G of RAM. 2000Mhz sounds like it's factory OC'd, is it? If it it, look at getting the un-pre-OC'd version and doing it yourself for nowt.

As for the gfx card, how much are they charging for it? If it's around the same as a new spankig Radeon 5850, get the 5850. It's the mutt's nuts, bee's knees and parts of other animals, too. It beats the GeFOrce 295 for a shedload less. ATI are really owning the GPU market right now so take advantage of it.

What mobo and PSU are you looking at?

The PSU will be fine, yeah.

Done some quick checking into the RAM. 2000Mhz is the top end. DDR3 begins at 1066Mhz, so personally I'd drop to some Seagate 1066Mhz RAM and use the saving to get another 2G. You'll get more performance for your money for the extra RAM and you can OC the Seagate ones yourself easily enough

Just did a quick check of tf the OC UK site; the cheapest you can get a GTX 285 is 218 quid, or 230 for the 5850. Trust me, get the 5850. It pisses over the 285. Do a quick google search for tests between the two

Since my PC kicked the bucket (motherboard died) I've suddenly become all knowledgable now, I now know the pros/cons to nearly every single PC case, monitor, ram & graphics card

The only thing I have no idea on is watercooling & heatsinks. Imo they aren't worth it, my new roommate (guy, unfortunately - not the hot chick with the skimpy pjs) has a crossfire HD4850sx2 + a giant heatsink with no water cooling. His PC seems to use up an incredible amount of power even when its idling, producing at least 75% of the heat in our computer room that blasts out of the PC case - thank god he's got a Antec P182 case to block out a majority of the noise but its still very loud & enough to annoy anyone if you're not using your speakers/headphones. Its much better to just avoid overclocking if you can and get a Sapphire Vapor-X HD4890 which plays todays games silky smooth, its factory overclocked and it has a patented cooling system which means a cooler pc & a more energy efficent & quieter pc thanks to its much bigger than normal HD4890 stock fan

Am I actually going to let you bully me into building my own PC?

Basically, I've a budget of £500 for a tower (as in, no monitors, speakers, keyboards, mouse, etc - I have all that). I won't be using it for games; all I want it to do is run Photoshop / the Adobe Suite well and surf the Internet on it.

I'm thinking I should have a MASSIVE hard drive in there for all my music and photos and a seperate one for my OS... which is what I currently have / had. But then I'm always wary of having a backup of my photos / music - so am I better off just storing it all one one HD and having a raid set up?

I dunno. Advise me and I might not buy a PC from Dell and might buy parts instead.

After looking around and doing *some* research, I've decided pre-built PCs aren't cutting it for me and that I should build my own.

I helped put together my ex-missus' PC when she did hers, so I'll be okay actually putting the parts together myself - but I am just rubbish at working out what parts work with what (ie, getting the right combination of Power Supply, motherboard, processor, etc).

If anyone has any recommendations, pray tell.

I've been busy with my sons christeing this weekend, Coxy, so I'll look today at work. One thing, do you need an OS?

With what you're after, ie more useful stuff, less games, we've at least narrowed it down to a quad core CPD over a duel core and we don't need to go over board wuth the RAM. I'll get back today.....

If its a M$ os you need go for Windows 7 - it really is as good as everyone says. But with that power, go for the ultimate edition so you can have the proper XP compatibility mode.

In terms of OS, I'd probably run Windows 7. I was running a RC of Windows 7 before my PC died - duel booting with Crunchbang Linux (Ubuntu-based).

For a side note, the case needs to be nice because it'll be sat in my lounge in full view of visitors. Oh, and I can up my budget to £700 - max.
