Blu Ray Recent Purchases
« on: 17 August 2009 at 08:39pm »
Right, two definite candidates for me in September are, Sunrise from Masters Of Cinema, sadly they've ditched the idea of following Disney with a DVD/Blu Ray combo.

Sunrise - F. W. Murnau, 1927
This new 2009 reissue of Sunrise (for the first time anywhere in the world in 1080p HD on Blu-ray, in addition to a newly mastered 2 x DVD set) contains two versions of the film: the previously released Movietone version, and an alternate silent version of the film recently discovered in the Czech Republic. The Blu-ray edition includes both versions in 1080p HD.

The culmination of one of the greatest careers in film history, F. W. Murnau’s Sunrise blends a story of fable-like simplicity with unparalleled visual imagination and technical ingenuity. Invited to Hollywood by William Fox and given total artistic freedom on any project he wished, Murnau’s tale of the idyllic marriage of a peasant couple (George O’Brien and Janet Gaynor) threatened by a Machiavellian seductress from the city (Margaret Livingston) created a milestone of film expressionism.

Made in the twilight of the silent era, it became both a swan song for a vanishing medium and one of the few films to instantly achieve legendary status. Winner of three Oscars for Best Actress (Gaynor), Cinematography, and a never-repeated award for “Unique and Artistic Picture”, its influence and stature has only grown with each passing year. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present a new 2xDVD and Blu-ray special edition of the film, including an all-new alternate version recently discovered in a Czech archive of a higher visual quality than any other known source.

Content:
• Restored high-definition transfers of two different versions: the American Movietone version, and the silent Czech version.

• Original English intertitles on the Movietone version, and optional English subtitles on the silent Czech version.

• Original Movietone score (mono) and alternate Olympic Chamber Orchestra score (stereo)

• Full-length audio commentary by ASC cinematographer John Bailey on the Movietone version

• Outtakes with either John Bailey commentary or intertitles

• Murnau’s 4 Devils: Traces of a Lost Film — Janet Bergstrom’s updated 40-minute documentary about the lost Murnau film

• Original theatrical trailer

• Original ‘photoplay’ script by Carl Mayer with Murnau’s handwritten annotations (150 pages in pdf format)

• 68-page illustrated booklet with numerous essays including a new reprint of a piece by Dudley Andrew.

Bought Let The Right One In the other day. Havn't watched it yet but i'm hoping its the original subtitled and not the lame dubbed version.

I bought the US version as it was region free.  Although they released a revised c=version that contained the original theatrical subtitles as the one I bought had a 'dumbed down' one.

I was a little disappointed with the film tbh but that was mainly because I really loved the book.

I purchased a porn bluray, the detail is pretty sweet :D Even though I couldn't find a PQ review on it I'm very impressed with the amount of detail when compared to the DVD version which was very soft. Anybody want any screencaps? lol

My last bluray purchase was 5x empty bluray cases since the website I ordered from doesn't use the original case outside of USA shipments, wondered why the p&h costs sounded so cheap :(

Can't remember if I've mentioned this but I bought Batman & Batman Returns last week

Lol, okay here's one, bluray on top, DVD on bottom. Unfortunately the bluray has an annoying presentation so I can't remove that and I blocked the title & girl's name to stop people looking it up :P Very hard to find a frame I could actually use as well since the bluray was the extended edition and had different cuts of closeups

Ooooooooohohhhhhhhhh.......shes eating an oversized Foxes glacier mint...and she loves it!!

Good quality though. Porns the main reason bluray succeeded, as it has been in the past with dvd and vhs

You should see what else she does with the icecube ;) Disappointing there wasn't an entire scene devoted to that (it was more of a mini screensaver inbetween the other stuff), there was one scene in particular which lasted for 20min and made me cringe, weird japanese....

Also from now on, I'm sticking to porn blurays only :P That was my first one. Best part is, they're all region free!

Apart from increased visuals what else do they offer over a DVD or yarr based media?

More likely to have 5.1 surround sound to make it feel like you're having sex with them :P Actually it doesn't seem to be supported in this one :( But having readable smooth subtitles for foreign stuff is certainly a plus and blurays usually contain a bit more content than their DVD counterparts & the packaging looks better :D

Lol, seriously? I know that the internet does lack bluray reviews of porn though, especially imported ones. Its really hard to find a japanese porn that doesn't have any scenes involving bondage or being tied up (this one has both but most of the time its pretty sexy thanks to the girl) :D

Bondage is being tied up though, unless youre trying to add value by describinh S&M in two different ways.

You could review BR porn, I guess, there wouldnt be much competition - I doubt youd have to furiously beat them off. Im sure though if you became a respected reviewer, youd find it hard to pull yourself off the pedestal.

Yeah, S&M - that's the one. Not familiar with that term really since I avoid anything that gets a bit too freaky

Also I'm not sure if I want to review porn as I'm the type of person who tries my best to hide it :P

Haha

Anyway I noticed that the website I bought the porn bluray from are having a massive sale on practically everything including 1080p filmed blurays for US$10 that look quite decent, I may pick a couple of more up!

Picked up Stateside the following:

300 Complete Experience (with comic and nice book packaging)
Dr Strangelove (comes in a book package, nice read)
Rambo First Blood ($9.99 Best Buy bargain!)
Watchmen Directors Cut

Also Gladiator is out this week, so must pick that up in the Steelbook edition. Hearing mixed things about the picture quality.
