I just ordered the original drum kit for Rock Band and I'm considering ordering this:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/OFFICIAL-ROCK-BAND-2-BASS-DRUM-KICK-PEDAL-Wii-Xbox-PS3_W0QQitemZ220445162826QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVideo_Games_Accessories?hash=item33538e3d4a&_trksid=p3286.m63.l1177&_trkparms=240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

Its the Rock Band 2 official pedal replacement. I'm sure that the plastic pedal will break so that's why I want a backup before that happens. Question though, I've never used the drum kit before - would the orange pedal only be for playing the game on expert mode or does it work like the guitar's strum where you have to tap it as well as hit one of the drums (lets say Red) at the same time even though there aren't any orange notes on the screen?

The drum track has 4 note (red, yellow, blue and green) which are played by hitting the corresponding pad. The bass notes are represented by an orange line across the track and is played with the pedal. This allows for one or two drums to be hit at the same time as the bass drum (if the song requires it).

The bass drum isn't only used in expert although you wont see a great deal of it until later into medium at least.

FYI, unless you plan to stomp the shit out of it the pedal is actually quite hard wearing. Mine is still in perfect working order and the only person I know with a broken one did it by accident, not through playing.

Thanks, good to know. Instead of looking at a reinforced pedal I'm now looking in this direction at the Pulse Rock Pedal

http://www.rockpedal.com/

Its got a lot of amazing reviews and its easy to customise plus since everything is made out of metal there's no worrying about broken parts and its much easier to use without getting sore legs. Shipping is quite nasty (US$58 to Australia) but the product sounds perfect. Perhaps I should wait until my drums arrive before I make such expensive decisions

I'd just use the provided pedal, personally. Mine's been fine since I got it over a year ago, although I don't use it that frequently anymore.
I did accidentally snap my friend's one, though. :(

EDIT: I've used one of those rock pedals (above) and they're excellent. But a bit excessive!!

Its a bit like someone coming over to your house with a real drum kit compared to your fake one and just generally beating the crap out of you isn't it? :P

I know it does seem excessive but if I break mine I think that'd be my replacement

When my Rock Band pedal stopped working, EA sent me a new one and it arrived within 36 hours.  I did not have to send the old one back, or even provide a proof of purchase.
