I need some advice from you folks.

I'm in the process of baby-proofing my living room, and have to try and resolve the problem of Holly attacking the PS3. It's currently on a wooden TV stand shelf, open at the back and front.

Instead of forking out on a new TV cabinet with doors (the cheapest one that'll do the job I've seen is £150), I have the cunning plan to convert the existing cabinet's drawer into a secret compartment.

I'd remove the drawer, dismantle it, and then put hinges on the drawer front so it'll flip down to reveal the PS3. The drawer is open at the back, and I'd keep the front open when I'm playing, so the front would only be shut when the console's on standby. I also have the PS3 set up so that it can be turned on remotely by my PSP. This means that the wifi is always on too.

I have concerns about overheating - is this a good plan?

The vents are probably at the rear, so it shouldnt be a problem, so long as theres space behind the cabinet, I guess. Madison was like that with the sky box, but it didnt last too long tbh.

My PS3 (and my 360 come to think of it) are both cramed into a small cabinet that only has opening to the front and the rear.  They are fin e.

As long as it's not stuck in a closed cabinet it should be fine.

Here is a picture of all the heaters I have in my lounge.  Sorry about the quality - iphone camera not up to much, especially with so much light this morning.....

I have only had my 360 RROD once and that was before I had jammed my DVD, PS3 and 360 into the one side unit compartment.  Anyone know what film I am watching this morning?  First HD-DVD I have watched in ages and I don't know how I ever thought the fan noise from the 360/HDDVD add-on was acceptable.  If I ever see these films cheap on bluray I am purchasing.

Tight fit.

Isn't there supposed to be at least 1inch of space around the sides of a 360/PS3?   Can you move the DVD player to the other side + drop the shelf height to give both consoles some breathing space?

That's the only way I can have it without ditching my DVD player (it is my only multiregion one, unless the PS3 plays any region DVDs.

Seems ok for now, and I am in the process of buying a new house that will HAVE to incur a major lounge-visual re-config.  Even have permission from my superior missus!!

Thanks for the advice - I went ahead and constructed it today. I'm pretty sure Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor would be proud.

Oooo no PS3

Hey presto, abracadabra!

It'll probably be fine. There's a bit of breathing room around it.

As long as the rear is well ventilated and you make sure dust doesn't build up then it should be fine.

The amount of heat the PS3 puts out is crazy.

As apposed to the 360 that must have loft insulation lining it's insides.

I'm sure Tim would want to put an engine in it somewhere :P Not a bad effort but it still looks like it came from Ikea
