Shit man.  That is sucks.

Ill use that to coin a new GS based term. That is "SpriteBait"™

And yeah, Monty, its hard to be able to plan when you dont know quite whats going on. With my job they did say we'll do things on a month by month basis, but I just cant be that unsure whether Ill have a job the next month. Its scary, big time, but I have a great deal of experience in website management and ecommerce, so hopefully someone will notice and give me a job, even if its contracted for 6 months, while I finish my side project.

Nah, that was my side project, but our dual-bass bass player, Hermann von Gerrmann was involved in an accident with a busload of nuns, a jar of pickles, and an inflatable dingy, so we decided to can it before we recorded our first album (his 7 fingered right hand is, well, irreplaceable). No, my side project is my own online shop, basically doing what I used to at AVSales, but for myself, using my experience over the past 4 years in ecommerce/online shops to make money for myself and my two business partners instead of someone else. But its nearly finished, so to bridge that gap, ill need to find some kind of job in the interim.

What a fucking joke! We’ve just had a meeting to give us an update on the system which will replace us and how it affects redundancies and team changes. The March/April date has now been stretched back to June/July. Last year, when we first heard about the upcoming redundancies, we were told that it would all be done and dusted by June/July this year so they are already a whole year behind schedule now.

As a small plus, by working into June next year I will cross the threshold of my 8th year of employment and my pay off will go up. On the downside it’s going to cost me so much more to go somewhere hot at that time of year.

Are you coding your own shopping cart system, or customizing something existing?

Customizing magento, as its bar none, the best shopping software you can get with a free version and a feature rich version you can move onto when profits start increasing. I worked solidly on a shopsite for 4 years, customising another piece of software called ecommercetemplates, and magento just does it out the box. Its complicated to get your head around to start with though.

CHeck with the local government, Tubs - the federal government down here have started a scheme for people who want to set up their own business now quite a few people are out of qork.  bsicially, you submit your business idea and if it's accepted you get a free course in small business managent, information support for the first year and, best of all, you get to claim job seekers allowance for the first year regardless of what your business makes.

You never know, the UK giv may have a similar scheme.

I just found out yesterday that the project I was workng on when I left my job in Perth told all the people on it that when it finishes in around a month, they all have to re apply for their jobs back.  In other words, they're getting rid of most of them.  Knowing that if I had stayed in Perth I would have been still out of a job is actually wierdly comforting.

What's happening with your side project?  Must be a tough time starting a new business in these times.

Unlucky mate, I'm sure you'll find something soon as you have a good skill set. Do you subscribe to any online find-a-job sites? When I was looking for a job they actually emailed me some quite useful job opportunities.

Good luck.

I've got an interview coming up (not got a date yet) for another position within my department. I'll still be at risk of redundancy come next June but if I get it I'll be earning a good chunk more up until then.

After many years of unemployment, and despite the current state of the UK/Global economy, I'm now employed by a very popular, UK based, video gaming website.

Best thing about it: I get to work from home.

If it wasn't for GameStyle's laid back boards, I probably would have never have gotten into the whole 'forum thing' and in a roundabout way wouldn't have got the job.  So, erm, yeah... thanks guys! :D

You're all welcome to join the [lightly populated] forums.  Make a couple of intelligent posts and you'll be in with a chance of becoming 'Member of the Month', which nets you a game of your choice (value up to £50) from Game.co.uk.   It shouldn't be hard for you guys.
