Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes revival
« on: 15 May 2008 at 06:48pm »
I'm getting ready for the release of MGS4 by playing through 1 and 2 again to remind myself of the story. Though I'm pretty sure I could play through them twenty times and the MGS2 ending will still leave me confused. I'm forgetting 3 as I never did get on with it. As far as I'm concerned the controls were awful and they over complicated it with all this camouflage and hunting for food nonsense. It was only a prequel anyway, and I read up on the story from Wikipedia. I'm not missing anything. ;) Anyway, first stop....The Twin Snakes.

Two reasons why I'm not playing the original PSOne game. Firstly I don't have it and secondly Twin Snakes is easier and prettier. Got used to the controls in that opening warehouse area. Got killed twice while I figured out the grabbing stuff. Got further in and remembered how atrocious the dialogue is. "Snake, those are Alaskan field mice. They survive the cold because of their stomach acids". Really? Fucking fascinating that is.

Did the whole jail break thing with Meryl and just killed Revolver Ocelot thanks to the amazing inclusion of the first person camera mode. Plot wise it hasn't gone bat shit crazy yet. More to come tommorow.

The start of my second day.

Contacted Meryl by using the number on the "back of the package". It makes me wonder how many people who don't have guides or access to the internet would've been able to figure this out. It seems a little bit obscure to look at the back of the game box. Oh well. Went through the laser beams by using my trusty smokes before jumping through the mines like a madman because I couldn't be arsed to go back and get the mine detector. Then I took on Vulcan Raven. I died twice fir crying out loud. :( Managed to take him down though by spamming him with grenades.

On I went to the next area. Made my way through the nuclear warhead place by jumping behind boxes and under a truck. After I came out the elevator I went into the toilet where someone was taking a piss. So I broke his neck. When I came out another guard was coming. So I jumped behind a pillar and as he noticed the dead guard I broke his neck as well. :)

Got myself the remote controlled rocket launcher so I could destroy the device that was electrifying the floor. Afterwards it was an amazing cut scene where the ninja took out a load of guards in a flurry of blood and broken bones. Had a fist fight with Ninja before he disappeared and I got to meet Otacon whose dialogue is truly awful. "Call me Otacon.....it stands for Otaku Convention". Good lord.  I'll play more before the end of the day, I'm enjoying this revival.

One of the few games I completed over a single weekend. Mostly 'cos it's so good, but it's also not very long. Been through the whole game 12 times to date (11 on the original, once on Twin Snakes).

That 'CD case' malarky is particularly silly as you're told to look there at the same time as being given an in-game data disc. Cue everybody trying to select the item from the menu to see the "hidden code".

Oh, it's as good a time as any to post this again, I suppose:

Just beat Pyscho Mantis with the ol' controller in the second port trick. Classic boss battle. It's still ace when he reads your memory card.

"So you like Nintendo games do you?"

"You've been playing Super Mario Sunshine haven't you?" :D

I'd forgotten about that! That was a really good little trick.

Onto Disc 2 now.

Did the torture sequence withoutb submitting so I get the Meryl ending and just took out the Hind with my rocket launcher, which came complete with an over the top cut scene like only Ryuhei Kitamura can direct.

Now it's onto destroy Metal Gear!

Just completed it. I love the fist fight with Liquid and the jeep chase. I just wish they wouldn't talk so much bollocks during the codec sequences. I hope the script writer got sacked.

I have just been given this by a friend. Quite happy with that too as eBay prices on this are crazy at the moment. I'm looking forward to going back to Shadow Moses in nice shiny vision on the GameCube.

So is there anything new here or is it a straight port from the PS1 version?

The cut scenes are different. They're now directed by Ryuhei Kitamura (Versus, Azumi, Godzilla: Final Wars) so get ready for some bizarre acrobatics. Also the first person view from MGS2 has been added, which according to MGS purists makes the whole experience too easy.
