Just wondering really....

I remember reading somewhere that GS is having a little trouble retaining/attracting new members?  Not that I don't like the close knit community on these boards but is there anything that can be done to attract more?  e.g. run adverts anywhere (would be cool to advertise in a game one day like in vegas )?  I can see how it can be difficult though, but one thing that could really boost members etc would be to post video reviews/discussions on youtube maybe?  Or maybe even weird promo vids on youtube, puitting the right tags on any video can throw it into all sorts of lists when people search there.

i don't know...it's easier said than done i suppose.  Just always a little gutted to check GS for the hundredth time that hour to see if anything has been posted to find that its not.  Its funny how quiet these boards get on a weekend though.  At least it shows we all have social lives ;)

Heh, yeah, that is true. We've always been quite quiet and it's nice. But we will attract more members in the long-term.

It feels like i'm always saying this, but Dave and I are working on a new version of the site. It should be ready soon, and then we will start methods of promotion. It's good to hear your concern though.

It's been like this as long as I can remember (semi-nekked ladies on homepage days  ), but I've gotta say its quieter now than a few years back.

The forum software is sh*te and not fit for purpose - clearly that doesn't help

*Edit* - And I wasn't actually going to mention this, but as it occurred in the next thread I looked at.....

The general trend of pointing out spelling/grammatical/typographical errors on the forums.  Fuck me, when did that start becoming 'clever'?  Surely that puts any new people off joining?

Speaking of correcting other peoples spelling, what ever happened to Bob Todd?

I was thinking about removing the news forum, as it doesn't get used like it did before the main site was changed.  The trading forum could be really popular but would need some attention and policing first.

On the subject of new members, I'm not sure about the way forward.  The forum is Dean's holy grail, I think that's something he really set out to do in the beginning but we were hampered by forum software issues and hackers and all the nonsense of the internet.   Now we have a stable environment which may not be to everyone's liking, but the soap box is in place and it's less likely to collapse now than ever before.

We seem to have plenty of guests and the odd registration.   It can be quiet but the community here is good, although smaller than a Shetland island.  I've been guilty perhaps of not posting more or striking up conversations here, I may favour speaking to myself mostly but I'll try more in 2008.

I think the trading forum is a really nice idea....head over to AVForums to see what they do.  Its on quite a large scale but I have used it many times and I favour this to eBay now whenever its possible.

To be a little more constructive rather than being a cock and saying its shite (glad you and dean-o know me and my gob well enough....!) - whereby I remember the absolute nightmare the hacking was at the time, and that this forum software is good and stable, but as an end user it can be difficult and unwieldy.

Front end-wise, its fine to me, but once you get into posting and editing its just not clear - I find it too busy.  It seems like you almost have to learn the software to begin posting - not everyone is IT savvy enough (or can be arsed) and that, for someone who wants to come in, simply post some Garble (where is he these days?) and get out, isn't that great.  Personally, I've never been keen - IMHO it's too complex for a relatively simple job, offering too many options...User CP is just off putting from the get-go.  Its like having a moderator panel.  Maybe stripping back some of the options open to the end user, tidying up the smilies and removing the least used options from the text manipulation options may help there.

The 'smaller than a Shetland Island' analogy is quite apt - Imagine trying to join and fit into a small Shetland Island community, personally I'd find that difficult - not through resistance to change, mind.  I think my long disappearing acts/general lurking help me see Gamestyle's forum as a newcomer again - a lot of people who I remember frequenting the forum a couple of years back are gone, and it doesn't look as if those numbers have been replaced.  Since I've been frequenting a bit more (mainly since I got my 360) I've found the forums very frustrating - and as in my first (errant) post when I see people correcting others spelling mistakes, be it 'community in-joke' or not, it just makes me '  ' in the way that A/V used to.  Blimey, I had to tell him to cut the staff some slack

I may favour speaking to myself mostly but I'll try more in 2008.

Thats enough of my ponderings tonight anyhow.....Sorry chaps

Remember when I first landed on these shores? I got kidnapped by Swainy in front of the closed Edge forums doors back in...2002 I think, not realising rllmuk had set up a replacement forum of his own. I think Sprite was the only fellow Edger I recognised here, so I stayed.

It all went downhill from there...;)
