It was rubbish. Funny in some places, not hilarious. It was on Film Four though, so I can't complain too much.

The Mist
Really enjoyed this last night. Its got a wicked Stephen King ending to it too. The characters in the supermarket were quite well done too - the religious woman really polarized everyone, and by the end we were shouting at the screen. Effects werent too bad either as it goes. A definate recommendation.

Universal Soldier Regeneration
A movie made by men for men about men killing other men. Its pretty good - infinitely better than the shitty sequels that came out. Very very open for a sequel - almost painfully so, as there are a couple of things left unresolved (ie what Dolph Lungren says or doesnt say)

Legion
Very cool film - as good as the trailer made out, which is nice. A definate recommendation from me, this one

Just saw Watchmen. Pretty decent but not a patch on the book. Liked the improvement on the female costumes though

Last film I saw was Avatar. Probably not much point reviewing it as everyone and their mum has seen it. It's really spectacular, though - do see it on the big screen if you have the chance if you haven't done so already.

Astro Boy (2009)

Some real horrible voice casting. Donald Sutherland as the evil guy who looks half of his age? Didn't work. Neither did Bill Nighy as Dr Elefun or Nicolas Cage as Dr Tenma. Astro Boy wasn't that bad (considering it is a kids voice) although his voice tone never changed so he seemed more robot than "human".

As for the story itself its pretty simple. A floating 'superior' city and a scrapyard below, Astro dies as a human & brought back to life as a robot and then father ditches him, gets adopted & turned into a robot gladiator, then an evil to-be-mayor acquires the opposite power core and turns into a giant robot where there's a showdown.

After the showdown there's a blatant ripoff ending from The Incredibles which feels way too similar to be the least bit original, heck, even the design of the robot looks exactly the same & had legs + shot a giant beam from its eye but painted red instead of gunmetal. Where is the Astro Boy love? Where is the emotion?

As ive said before, these 3d movies are rarely special, unless theyre preceded with a swivel arm lamp and a pixar logo. Sometimes theyre ok, (KFPanda, Bolt) but they really seem to lacklustre affairs - even the ones that showed promise (9) are disappointing.

I watched Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs the other night. Not even in the same league as Pixar films, but nonetheless quite funny. Had a sort of cartoon-network humour to it; proper jokes, dry wit and visual gags. Plus Mr. T is in it.

Don't watch it when hungry, though.

Hausa (aka House)

By a country mile the weirdest Japanese film I've ever seen. Shot in the 70's its a twist on a traditional Asian ghost story that sees a group of teenage girls on holiday at a remote House of a relative. The tale itself is nothing new but the director has thrown the rulebook out of the window and used every possible technique and graphic to create something original.

Trying to put it into context is difficult but think Monkey, with Mexican soap opera, plenty of LSD and moments of Dario Argento. It's a thrilling and unique experience that keeps you entertained on all levels. They've never made them like this before, or ever since.

Has anyone seen the Shinjuku Incident?

It's got Jackie Chan in it and it looks to be some kind of gritty thriller about Chinese refeugees in Japan?!?
No slapstick comedy from the looks of it? It's been a while since I have seen him in a film that wasn't kid based (New Police Story was the last I think).

The Blind Side
The prospect of a Bullock film would result in a groan however the Blind Side is a surprise, almost a revelation in parts with moments of tension, emotion and humour. Traditionally films based around American Football are often rags to riches tales or a team of underdogs performing miracles, with the exception of Any Given Sunday. The Blind Side possesses these elements but the spotlight fails on Sandra Bullock’s character (Leigh Anne Tuohy), as it is through her eyes we see the poverty and depression only a few blocks away from her middleclass lifestyle. The end is never in doubt and you do see the real-life characters briefly in a fitting ending. Overall the Blind Side is a decent enough film, one that will entertain and surprise. Bullock has shown here that there is talent and would do well to exploit it more in future projects.

Yes that's the one. Quite surprised but its been a poor year in general for Hollywood films and good female lead roles are very thin on the ground at the best of times.

I think we need to open up some new film threads!

Green Zone

Saw this tonight. Loved it. I think it is unfairly compared to Bourne Ultimatum as the feel and editing is very similar. It has a very fast kinetic pace that drives the story along. Personally I think Matt Damon's character is nothing like Mr. Bourne but the masses will say otherwise methinks. I know Empire gave it a favourable review but on Rotten tomatoes it scored quite low along with some other places.

The problem here is that I don't think many Americans will like it much due to the opinion of US military etc. I haven't seen Hurt Locker yet though, so I have nothing to compare it to. Well worth watching if you ask me.

I've ordered the book this film was based upon, however I have read elsewhere that the film shares little to no resemblance to the book (same old same old........Bourne books are completely different. But what book to film transfer isnt?)
