NAMCO BANDAI GAMES EUROPE ANNOUNCES TALES OF XILLIA™2 FOR PLAYSTATION®3

-A Multi-Dimension Epic Adventure Awaits Role-Playing Game Fans in 2014 from the Acclaimed TALES OF Development Team –

PARIS, FRANCE – July 8th, 2013 – Leading video game developer and publisher NAMCO BANDAI Games Europe S.A.S. announced this week-end, during a special event at the Japan Expo in Paris that TALES OF XILLIA™ 2 will be coming to Europe and Australasia exclusively for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system in 2014.  Building on the foundation of 2013’s TALES OF XILLIA™ gameplay and world, TALES OF XILLIA 2 will bring together brand new characters in this epic multiple dimensions spanning Japanese role-playing game experience.

TALES OF XILLIA 2 focuses on the events a year after the climactic end of TALES OF XILLIA.  Players assume the role of Ludger Kresnik, a young man who enjoys cooking and lives with his older brother and cat, Rollo.  On his way to his first day at work for a local cafeteria he runs into a young girl named Elle Marta and the two soon become involved in an accident that will change both of their lives forever.

TALES OF XILLIA 2 focuses its story theme around the concept of “choice”, which is also expressed heavily in the game’s overall gameplay mechanics.  Throughout Ludger’s journey the player will be able to decide how he reacts to various characters and situations.  These choices can cause the story to branch out into different paths.

Choice also extends to the battle system for TALES OF XILLIA 2 by enhancing the TALES OF series’ trademark gameplay.  Players will be able to initiate “Weapon Swap” in real-time during battles while controlling Ludger, allowing him to switch between three main weapons: dual blades, a sledgehammer and dual pistols, allowing for fast and strategic movements as he rushes across the battlefield.  Building on the base from TALES OF XILLIA’s battle system, the new Cross Dual Raid Linear Motion Battle System will let players link to any selectable character in battle to serve as a support character and perform linked artes against targeted enemies.  Different party members have different support characteristics and linked artes, allowing players to strategically decide which characters are linked to whom as various battle situations arise.

“We are extremely happy to bring another piece of the beloved Tales of franchise in Europe and Australasia” said Olivier Comte, Senior Vice-President at NAMCO BANDAI Games Europe. “TALES OF XILLIA players will be able to fall back into this deep storyline in 2014 with TALES OF XILLIA 2, as we will introduce brand new characters and let them experience new gameplay features but also improvements of the first opus battle system”

Wired Productions to Bring Back Music Maker eJay

You may remember a time during the PS2 era when music makers were doing the rounds. One of the most popular of these was eJay.

Wired Productions are bringing eJay back under the name eJay Pure and have a Kickstarter in place to get the project off the ground.

One of the best things about the original releases, was that anyone was able to pick it up and try their hand at making music. With the eJay coming to iOS and Android Wired Productions hope that bringing this package to a whole new audience could help uncover some talent that people never knew they had.

eJay Pure will be free for everyone to download and enjoy. You will get the full eJay experience from the first moment. If you enjoy what you create, you will be able to further your experience by purchasing additional features and buying many thousands of samples which will be constantly created.

eJay Pure is being developed from the ground up for touch screens so that the user interface is intuitive and the experience is fast and seamless.

Wired have been working on eJay Pure for 9 months, and have completed pre-production, technology tests, R&D, and have even started making some of the cutting edge samples that defined the eJay experience.

If you know about eJay products, you’ll know what is coming. Anyone that has had an eJay experience remembers it fondly. These products were fun, innovative and probably had a huge impact on your life! If you don’t, then you are in for a treat. A productive app, that has all the feel good elements that will have you shouting from the roof tops.

Playstation 4 Is Coming

PS4’s Powerful System Architecture, Social Integration and Intelligent Personalization, Combined with PlayStation Network with Cloud Technology, Delivers Breakthrough Gaming Experiences and Completely New Ways to Play

New York City, New York, February 20, 2013 –Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) today introduced PlayStation®4 (PS4™), its next generation computer entertainment system that redefines rich and immersive gameplay with powerful graphics and speed, intelligent personalization, deeply integrated social capabilities, and innovative second-screen features. Combined with PlayStation®Network with cloud technology, PS4 offers an expansive gaming ecosystem that is centered on gamers, enabling them to play when, where and how they want. PS4 will be available this holiday season.

Gamer Focused, Developer Inspired
PS4 was designed from the ground up to ensure that the very best games and the most immersive experiences reach PlayStation gamers. PS4 accomplishes this by enabling the greatest game developers in the world to unlock their creativity and push the boundaries of play through a system that is tuned specifically to their needs.

PS4 also fluidly connects players to the larger world of experiences offered by PlayStation, across the console and mobile spaces, and PlayStation® Network (PSN). The PS4 system architecture is distinguished by its high performance and ease of development. PS4 is centered around a powerful custom chip that contains eight x86-64 cores and a state of the art graphics processor.

The Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) has been enhanced in a number of ways, principally to allow for easier use of the GPU for general purpose computing (GPGPU) such as physics simulation. The GPU contains a unified array of 18 compute units, which collectively generate 1.84 Teraflops of processing power that can freely be applied to graphics, simulation tasks, or some mixture of the two.

PS4 is equipped with 8 GB of unified system memory, easing game creation and increasing the richness of content achievable on the platform. GDDR5 is used for this memory, giving the system 176 GB/second of bandwidth and providing a further boost to graphics performance. The end result for gamers is new games with rich, high-fidelity graphics and deeply immersive experiences that shatter expectations.

Shared Game Experiences
Social interaction is central to PS4 experiences, so new features were built into the actual foundation of the system’s hardware architecture. PS4 provides dedicated, “always on” video compression and decompression systems that enables seamless uploading of gameplay.

For the first time ever, gamers can share their epic triumphs with the press of a button. Gamers simply hit the “SHARE button” on the controller, scan through the last few minutes of gameplay, tag it and return to the game—the video uploads as the gamer plays. Gamers can share their images and videos to their friends on social networking services such as Facebook.

PS4 also enhances social spectating by enabling gamers to broadcast their gameplay in real-time to friends using live internet streaming services such as Ustream. During live broadcasts, friends can make comments on the streamed gameplay and, if a gamer gets stuck on a challenging level, friends can also join the game in completely new ways. For example, friends can offer health potions or special weapons when a player needs them most during actual gameplay.

Furthermore, users can connect their Facebook account with Sony Entertainment Network account. Through PS4, users are able to deepen their connections through co-op play or “cross-game chat”.

PS4 Second Screens
PS4 integrates second screens, including PlayStation®Vita (PS Vita), smartphones and
tablets, to wrap gamers in their favorite content wherever they are. A key feature enabled by
second screens is “Remote Play” and PS4 fully unlocks its potential by making PS Vita the
ultimate companion device. With PS Vita, gamers will be able to seamlessly pull PS4 titles
from their living room TVs and play them on PS Vita’s beautiful 5-inch display and intuitive
dual analog sticks over Wi-Fi networks *1. It is SCEI’s long-term vision is to make most PS4 titles playable on PS Vita *2.

A new application from SCE called “PlayStation®App” will enable iPhone, iPad, and AndroidTM based smartphones and tablets*3 to become second screens. Once installed on these devices, users can, for example, see maps on their second screens when playing an
adventure game, purchase PS4 games while away from home and download it directly to the
console at home, or remotely watch other gamers playing on their devices.

Immediate Gameplay
PS4 radically reduces the lag time between players and their content. PS4 features “suspend mode” which keeps the system in a low power state while preserving the game session. The time it takes today to boot a console and load a saved game will be a thing of the past. With PS4, gamers just hit the power button again and are promptly back playing the game at the exact point where they left off. Additionally, users can boot a variety of applications including a web browser when playing a game on PS4.

PS4 also enables games to be downloaded or updated in the background, or even in stand-by mode. The system takes it one step further by making digital titles playable as they are being downloaded. When a player purchases a game, PS4 downloads just a fraction of the data so gamers can start playing immediately, and the rest is downloaded in the background during actual gameplay.

Personalized, Curated Content
On the newly designed PS4 menu screen, players can look over game-related information shared by friends, view friends’ gameplay with ease, or obtain information of recommended content, including games, TV shows and movies. The long-term goal of PS4 is to reduce download times of digital titles to zero: if the system knows enough about a player to predict the next game they will purchase, then that game can be loaded and ready to go before they even click the “buy” button. PS4 will further enrich users’ entertainment experiences, by meeting their potential needs.

Gaming in the Cloud
Launched in November 2006, PlayStation Network, a network service for PlayStation users, now operates in 67 countries and regions*4 around the world with the total number of downloaded content of more than 2.8 billion*5. In addition to a variety of games available in PlayStation®Store, PS4 users will be able to enjoy a variety of services offered by PSN, such as Sony Corporation’s Music Unlimited, a cloud-based music subscription service and Video Unlimited, a premium video service, as well as various content distribution services.

By combining PlayStation Network with Gaikai Inc’s cloud technology, it is SCE’s goal to make free exploration possible for various games. In the future, when a gamer sees a title of interest in PlayStation Store, they can immediately start playing a portion of the actual game — not a stripped down version of the game. With Gaikai and PlayStation Store, gamers will be able to experience appealing games and only pay for the games they actually love. PlayStation Network and the cloud will offer additional value to PlayStation gamers. SCE is exploring unique opportunities enabled by cloud technology with the long-term vision of making PlayStation libraries including an incredible catalog of more than 3000 PS3 titles*6
that is unmatched in the industry, mostly ubiquitous on PS4.

SCE will announce new details of PS4 and its robust lineup of games from 3rd party developers and publishers, the independent gaming community and SCE Worldwide Studios, as well as further enhancements to the entire PlayStation ecosystem between now and the holiday 2013 launch.

Aliens: Colonial Marines Preview

Stop your grinnin’, and drop your linen!

After a long ten years, and more delays than the London Underground in winter, the latest instalment in the Alien franchise is nearly upon us.

A:CM was originally announced in 2001, and was planned to be released for the PS2. After several issues in development, the game was scrapped. In 2006, Sega bought the rights for future Aliens games, and immediately announced that they would be teaming with Gearbox to make a new Aliens game (unrelated to the 2001 title except for the name). News went quiet from this point, with very little being said until 2011, when a release of early 2012 was revealed. The fact that this review is being written late 2012 shows that this wasn’t the case. The release is now a definite early 2013 date, and fingers crossed, this will be the case. But enough of the past, let’s look at what the future holds.

A:CM is tied into the Aliens universe, but is not directly linked to any story that has been on the big screen. Following on from the 1986 sequel Aliens, A:CM shows the arrival of a rescue crew, who are there to check on the marines from the film who never returned. Obviously, this was due to a slight case of death, but it remains to be seen if they know exactly why. So, despite having not seen the films being an inexcusable offence, those poor souls that haven’t should still be able to work out what is going on.

For the fans of the films, the trailers are showing some very familiar sights. The main location for the game looks to be the Sulaco, the spaceship of the marines from the film, and it is just how it was left, even down to Bishops legs still lying on the cargo bay floor. LV-426 will also be visited, and looks just as dark and stormy as in the film. Accuracy is key for anything that is tied in to a major franchise, and A:CM looks to be spot on. This is also featured with the weaponry, as the familiar pulse rifles and sentry guns return, and the custom ‘3 guns taped together’ weapon of Ripley even makes an appearance as DLC.

What really looks impressive so far, is the horror side of the game. The films are tense affairs, with the aliens being masters of sneaking and being anywhere. The looks to have been captured perfectly in the story. This will not be a gung ho battle ala Call of Duty, with enemies running at you head on. This will be enemies jumping out of hidden openings, and sneaking up behind the player. An Aliens game should have the player on edge constantly, and it is looking like this will be the case. Gearbox and Sega have announced that the enemy A.I. will actively try and hide, then flank players wherever possible. Some sections of the game will contain ‘Last Stand’ elements, where the player has to defend certain locations as long as possible, and as the ammo runs low, these moments will be spreading panic like wildfire. It seems there will be a mix of stand and fight, with a touch of run like hell.

The enemies have been announced as being primarily the aliens from the films, along with some ‘new breeds’ that have been mentioned in other fiction, or made exclusively for the game. We can also expect other soldier types, which gives hints as to the possible direction that the story might take. The only concern is that the aliens will be demoted to just cannon fodder. If they end up being as dangerous as a Grunt from Halo, the game could end up being a disaster.

Multiplayer looks a bit more sketchy sadly. A:CM gives the player the option of playing as a marine, or as an alien. However, in the gameplay for the aliens, it seems to be head on rather than stealth. It may still be great fun, but there is also a big possibility that unless people play in the spirit intended, it won’t work properly.

For the fans of release day extras and collectors editions, there is a delightful looking special edition of this game. DLC including characters from the Aliens film, an exclusive level, various paperwork items, a statue and a special collector box all await those who make a purchase.

After some of the dross that has blemished the Aliens name, in both film and game, the series needs a lift. It is baffling that so many professionals just can’t make a decent horror game around these characters. Everything is there, but nothing feels right. The sceptic in us will assume the worse about A:CM, but from what has been revealed, it is actually looking very promising. A proper Aliens game would be a shoe in for one of the greatest horror games ever, so Gearbox and Sega can know that if they do nail this, they will be on to a winner.
